Globe director Dominic Dromgoole swaps stage for cinema

Former director of the famous Globe Theater in London will direct and produce feature films.

Former director of the famous Globe Theater in London has embarked on a new career to direct and produce feature films.

After 10 years at the Globe, Dominic Dromgoole will follow in the footsteps of English directors Stephen Daldry and Sam Mendes, turning his sights on cinema with the launch of a new career directing and producing feature films.

Dominic Dromgoole was artistic director at Shakespeare’s Globe from 2006 to 2016.

He hopes to emulate comparable film success as those achieved by directors Stephen Daldry and Sam Mendes, who also moved from stage to screen.

Dromgoole is working on six low-budget feature films.

“I hope that the ‘chamber epic’ still has a place in contemporary cinema and that you don’t have to spend USD 100m. You don’t have to have high concepts and explosions. Just stories that tell truths about human beings,” Dromgoole said.

The stage director compared modern day cinematic hits such as ‘Manchester by the Sea’ and ‘Hell or High Water’ to productions he intends to bring, because, “there’s just human life, a compelling fascination that no amount of large budgets can equal for me.”

Dromgoole got his first taste of filmmaking when he launched a video-on-demand platform and also showed 37 short films along the Thames River, celebrating every one of Shakespeare’s plays in their real settings.
